What is Rucking ?
Rucking is an exercise that involves walking with additional weight using a rucksack or carrier or even a weighted vest. Its recently gained in popularity due to Tiktok and other social media but its not new, the army have been using this as a form of exercise for years and is known as “yomping”.
Rucking has a number of health benefits. You will burn more calories than walking and the extra weight on your back helps build strength and improves posture. Add more weight and you will burn more calories.
One big advantage of rucking is that it requires very little equipment. A rucksack / backpack and some heavy objects is all you need. You can use rocks, books, weights etc but just make sure your rucksack is comfortable to carry. A good pair of walking boots / shoes is advisable too.
For beginners its advisable to start with a light load and a short distance of 1-3 miles. As your fitness improves you can add weight and increase distance.
