The Importance of Regular Exercise

It is very tempting to overlook the importance of regular exercise when there are so many other things you could be doing with your time. After coming home from work, you don’t always feel like going for a run or to the gym, especially as you may prefer to catch up on your favourite television shows or play video games. However, it is in your best interests to make exercise a part of your routine, as keeping active will enable you to stay fit and healthy. Although it may be easier to make excuses not to exercise, it won’t take you long to recognise the benefits of increasing your activity levels.

For one thing, regular exercise will enable you to manage your weight more effectively. Obesity rates continue to rise, as many people lead a lifestyle that makes maintaining a healthy weight more difficult. If you have a job sitting in an office all day and drive your car everywhere, whilst eating a diet that consists mainly of convenience meals and junk food, it is bound to be harder to keep your weight under control. One of the benefits of regular exercise is that it enables you to increase your calorie expenditure, so that you can consume more calories without gaining weight. Keeping active can also help you to lose weight, as long as you also pay attention to your calorie intake and make sufficient changes.

It is important to maintain a healthy weight, as being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing weight-related problems. By choosing to do some kind of aerobic activity, such as cycling or walking, on a regular basis your heart will work with greater efficiency and your stamina will increase. If you exercise regularly, your chances of developing heart disease are significantly reduced. Plus, it will be easier to keep your blood pressure under control, which is important as high blood pressure can lead to stroke or a heart attack. Also, regular exercise should improve the balance of your cholesterol by reducing the presence of ‘bad’ cholesterol.

There are plenty of other health benefits associated with regular exercise, including that your chances of developing type 2 diabetes, a serious chronic condition that can affect the quality and length of your life, will be significantly reduced. Plus, keeping active may help to reduce the likelihood of developing certain cancers, such as colon, breast, lung, prostate and endometrial, whilst if you are undergoing cancer treatment exercise can actually prove beneficial. Exercise can help with lower back pain; help reduce the pain caused by osteoarthritis and also help keep your bones strong, reducing the likelihood of osteoporosis.

Regular exercise is not only beneficial for your physical health; it can also boost your mental state as well. By keeping active you are less likely to suffer from depression and if you do have depression, getting some exercise can help alleviate the symptoms and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. When you exercise, endorphins are released into your body and they give you a natural high, which may help you feel more inclined to exercise again in future. This can only be a good thing, since being physically fit can boost your self-esteem and improve your overall well-being, leaving you better able to cope with the stresses and strains of life.

It is therefore definitely worth making exercise into a habit that you do daily or at least five times a week. To really appreciate the benefits, it helps to exercise for long enough and hard enough to be left feeling slightly out of breath. It might be tough at first, but you only get fitter by pushing yourself and when there are so many benefits associated with regular exercise it makes sense to put the effort in, especially if doing so could improve your quality of life.
