If you’re trying to lead a more active lifestyle, walking is definitely an activity worth making time for. Not only is walking easy to do; it is also an activity that you should be able to slot into your day, meaning that lack of time is not a legitimate excuse to get out of doing it! You don’t need any specialist equipment or training to walk, because all you have to do is put one foot in front of the other and keep the momentum going. Of course, if you want to access all the health benefits associated with walking, you need to actually put some effort in, rather than just sauntering along, although, ultimately, doing anything is better than doing nothing.
By leaving your car at home and walking to the shops or going for a walk in the park with your friends, you will burn a greater number of calories. Whether you’re trying to maintain your ideal weight or lose weight to become healthier, walking can help. Ideally, you should aim to walk at least half an hour a day and to walk fast enough that you are left slightly out of breath. If you want to increase the number of calories you burn, you can increase the distance you walk; walk across tougher terrain; or walk faster. When you are just starting off, it makes sense not to push yourself too hard, as you don’t want to injure yourself.
However, when it comes to the likelihood of injury, walking is probably one of the better options, especially if you’re not very fit, because although it is a weight-bearing form of exercise, it is relatively low-impact, particularly when compared to activities such as running. Thus, you are less likely to experience the pain and discomfort which can occur when your joints are exposed to excessive force. Indeed, walking can actually be beneficial for your knee joints, as it keeps them moving, and since it helps to strengthen your muscles and bones, it can reduce your chances of developing conditions such as osteoporosis and arthritis.
Walking can benefit your health in other ways, too, since it is an aerobic exercise, which means that the fitter you get, the more efficient your body becomes at utilising oxygen. As your fitness increases, you will find it easier to push yourself more, as you build stamina. This is good news for your health, as giving your heart a good workout reduces the likelihood that you will develop heart disease, whilst it will also be much easier to keep your blood pressure under control. Plus, walking can reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, thus giving you another reason to make walking a daily habit.
Another benefit of walking is that there is so much variety when it comes to where you walk and who you walk with. You may choose to walk through the park alone, listening to music; or along the beach with your partner; you might decide to walk through the countryside; or avoid the rain and walk on a treadmill. It is an activity for people of all ages and fitness levels which you have to do at least a little bit of, anyway, if you are to get from place to place.
It is also worth walking more, as it makes you feel good, since endorphins are released into the body that leave you feeling happier and more positive, whilst reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. You will also feel more energised once walking becomes a regular feature of your daily schedule, whilst regular exercise can also help improve the quality of your sleep, as long as you don’t exercise too vigorously just before bedtime!
Overall, then, there are plenty of reasons to slip on your trainers and get walking more, since doing so will make it easier for you to control your weight; will help to keep your bones strong and your joints in good condition; will reduce the likelihood of serious health issues, such as heart disease; and will also make you feel better about yourself.
